Originating from ancient Persia, purple and yellow carrots were eaten more than 1000 years ago in Afghanistan and over 700 years ago in Western Europe. Carrots only became orange in the 1500s when patriotic Dutch growers developed a carrot in an attempt to nationalise the country's favourite vegetable. The purple carrot was reintroduced about 50 years ago, and because of it's sweet flavour and antioxidant properties, it has recently become more popular.
